Downtown Greenville was the first place my husband, Tim, and I visited when we moved here, and we fell in love with it.
We sat outside and had lunch on the patio at what was then Mary’s at Falls Cottage. Between the outdoor dining, the waterfall, and everything around us, it was such a memorable introduction to our new hometown.
That little cottage is now Stone Cottage, a café from the owners of Passerelle Bistro. It offers breakfast, lunch, and picnic baskets, so you can still make a meal part of your visit to the park.
Years later, downtown is still a place we enjoy spending time. You can walk through Falls Park, get on the Swamp Rabbit Trail, browse shops, stop for coffee, or make an evening of dinner and drinks. You don’t need a packed itinerary to enjoy it.
Start With Falls Park and Liberty Bridge
Falls Park on the Reedy puts a waterfall right in downtown Greenville, with gardens, walking paths, and Liberty Bridge overlooking the falls.
I think that combination is part of what makes downtown feel so special. You can be walking past restaurants and shops, then find yourself enjoying the river and waterfall just a little farther along.
You’ll see families spending time together, people walking their dogs, runners getting their miles in, and visitors stopping for pictures. It feels lively, but you can also slow down and simply enjoy being outside.
For a first visit, give yourself time to cross Liberty Bridge, explore the park paths, and take in the waterfall from different viewpoints before moving on.
Keep Walking on the Swamp Rabbit Trail
Falls Park connects with the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail, giving you the option to turn a downtown visit into a longer walk or bike ride.
Greenville County currently describes the Swamp Rabbit Trail system as a 32-mile-and-growing network. That number refers to the overall system, rather than one uninterrupted route you can follow from end to end. Check the official map when planning your outing.
From Falls Park, you can follow the downtown trail toward Cleveland Park and the Greenville Zoo area, or explore in the other direction toward Unity Park. Choose a destination or a turnaround point that works for the time and energy you have.
You don’t have to cover a long distance to enjoy it. A walk, a coffee stop, and some time by the falls can be plenty for one afternoon.
The trail is shared by walkers, runners, and cyclists. Stay to the right, leave room for others to pass, and step off the main path when stopping for photos.
View the official Swamp Rabbit Trail information and maps before heading out, including current route information and any detours.
Walk Toward Cleveland Park and the Zoo
If you want to extend your outing, Cleveland Park and the Greenville Zoo area give you another destination along the trail.
The renovated Cleveland Park playground reopened in October 2026, making it another option for families planning a downtown day. The playground is in Cleveland Park near the zoo, rather than inside the zoo itself.
If you’re including a zoo visit, check its separate admission requirements and operating hours before you go. You’ll also want to account for the walk back to wherever you parked.
Our Favorite Downtown Restaurant Stops
For us, spending time downtown often includes something good to eat. Two of our favorite restaurants are Passerelle Bistro and Coral.
Passerelle Bistro
Passerelle Bistro is right beside Falls Park, making it an easy restaurant to work into a visit to the waterfall and Liberty Bridge. It’s one of our favorites and a good option if you want to sit down for a meal while spending time in this part of downtown.
Coral
Coral is another favorite of ours on South Main Street. If you enjoy an espresso martini, their coconut espresso martini is delicious!
A walk through downtown followed by dinner is a nice way to make an evening of it without needing to plan several separate activities.
Carmella’s for Coffee and Dessert
Carmella’s is a popular stop for coffee and dessert on South Main Street, within walking distance of Falls Park and Liberty Bridge.
It has that cute, quaint feel that fits so well with a downtown afternoon. If you want to add a coffee or dessert break to your walk, this is one to consider.
Explore Carmella’s Greenville location.
Stone Cottage
The former Mary’s at Falls Cottage holds a special memory for us because of that first lunch after moving here. Today, Stone Cottage offers a different way to enjoy the same historic spot, with breakfast and lunch options and picnic baskets you can order for the park.
Stop by Grand Bohemian Lodge
Grand Bohemian Lodge is another stop near Falls Park that’s worth working into your visit. You can go for a drink or a meal and spend a little more time enjoying this part of downtown.
We’ve seen a pianist playing during a weekend visit, which added to the atmosphere. If live music is something you’re planning around, check the lodge’s current schedule rather than assuming it will be happening every weekend.
At Christmastime, the Greenville Christmas Market brings vendors, holiday treats, decorations, and entertainment to the lodge. I love the little shops and festive feel. It’s a charming addition to a downtown holiday outing.
Check the Greenville Christmas Market website for current dates and hours.
Movies, Shakespeare, and Seasonal Events
One of the things I appreciate about downtown Greenville is that there are different reasons to come back throughout the year.
The Upstate Shakespeare Festival brings outdoor performances to Falls Park. If you enjoy theater, check The Warehouse Theatre’s current festival schedule and visitor information before planning your evening.
In the fall, Moonlight Movies is another downtown activity we enjoy. Watching a movie outside adds something different to an evening at the park.
Event dates, weather policies, and rules vary. Check the current listing before bringing pets, food, drinks, or seating.
Where to Park Downtown
There are several parking garages downtown, so you can choose one based on where you want to spend most of your time.
Richardson Street Garage, at 66 Richardson Street, is a good option if you want to start in the central Main Street area. From there, you can browse downtown and walk toward Falls Park.
If your main destination is the falls, RiverPlace Garage is another option to consider closer to that end of downtown.
Parking rates and event arrangements can change. Check the current information and posted signs rather than assuming a garage is free at a particular time.

A Simple Way to Spend the Day
If you’re visiting for the first time, here’s one way to put it together:
- Park downtown and take your time walking along Main Street.
- Browse a few shops on your way toward Falls Park.
- Cross Liberty Bridge and explore the park paths.
- Choose a stretch of the Swamp Rabbit Trail for a longer walk.
- Leave time for lunch, dinner, coffee, or dessert before heading home.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring water if you’re planning to walk for a while. The park has changes in elevation, so check your route if you need to avoid stairs or steeper paths.
Why Downtown Greenville Made Us Feel at Home
That first patio lunch is still part of how I remember moving to the Upstate. We were getting to know a new place, and downtown Greenville gave us so much to look forward to exploring.
There are restaurants, clothing shops, places to get ice cream, seasonal events, and a trail that lets you keep walking when you aren’t quite ready to head home. It’s a thriving downtown that we’ve continued to enjoy as residents.
As a Realtor, I love helping people discover that side of moving here, too. Finding a home also means getting to know the places where you might spend a Saturday afternoon or meet friends for dinner.
I help buyers and sellers throughout Greenville, Anderson, and Spartanburg counties. If you’re considering a move to the Upstate, I’d love to help you get to know the area and find a home that fits your next chapter.
